3 Free Taster Sessions-You don’t have to be a member to join one of our walks. After three walks you will need to sign up to become a member.
What to bring with you:
Clothing - Please make sure you have appropriate footwear with good ankle support and suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry. Quick drying fabrics and lightweight waterproofs will prevent you getting chilled if it rains, warmer jackets essential for winter walks. Suitable hats and gloves will also help you manage any changing weather conditions. Your walk leader can advise.
A change of footwear- Especially if you are car sharing. Footwear can become very muddy and wet even in Summer.
Food and Drink- Please make sure you have enough food & drink to last the day (recommended one litre of fluid on a full day walk, and more in hot weather or on longer walks)
Top tip: Most people choose to carry a daypack as it is more convenient to put things in, like warm jackets, food, and drinks.
Breaks – Full day walks often include short breaks for refreshments (and views!) Usually a mid-morning break(10-15mins), a lunchtime break (sometimes, but not always, at a pub, but we do not stop long enough to order a meal), and a mid-afternoon break. If there is no suitable seating at the break you may have to sit on the ground. (Top tip: Lightweight sit mats are available at most outdoor shops)
In case of Emergency(ICE)- For your own safety, Ramblers recommend that you carry emergency contact information. You can ask your walk leader, or you can view or download a pdf copy of the Ramblers ICE Card here.
Car sharing:
This is actively promoted through a standard passenger contribution rate of 10p/mile per passenger plus shared bridge tolls or parking costs. This reduces pressure on small rural parking spots, reduces our environmental impact, and encourages group co-operation. The walk leader will meet you at the meeting place and help with the car sharing arrangements to get everybody to the walk start location. Please make sure you carry some cash to pay your driver.
If you need to go directly to the start point, please discuss this with the walk leader.
The walks grades are as follows:
Please note that walks grades can only give a broad indication of a walk. Contacting the walk leader is advisable if you are in any doubt. Leaders’ contact details are given in the walks programme.
- C (Easy) - Walks on reasonably level ground and at an easy pace.
- B (Moderate) – Walks which can include some hills at an easy to moderate pace.
- A (Strenuous)– Walks at a faster pace which often include harder hill climbs and rougher terrain.
- AHW (A Hill Walks)– Walks at a faster pace, 4000ft or more of ascent, sometimes on rougher/wilder terrain. Often more remote so less likely to have a pub stop.
- BHW (B Hill Walks) – Walks more strenuous than a standard B walk with elevation tackled at a slower pace than A hill walks.
- Evening Walks – In Summer months with longer daylight hours. Some in the city and some outside Bristol. Longer walks marked (A) are faster.
- WWW (Wessex Wanderer Railway Walks) – These are walks designed to take advantage of the railway links in the area. More details are available on the walks programme.
Full Day walks are offered on Sundays and very occasionally on a Wednesday.
Half day walks are offered on most Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Evening Walks are offered in the Summer only.
Choosing the right walk- If it is your first walk with Bristol Ramblers you are advised to try a walk that is not too challenging to see how you get on, and find out if you have suitable equipment.
Meeting places for Sunday Walks:
